Slim
Barrett designs bespoke interior lighting including chandeliers, wall
lights and lamps to commission. Custom-made lighting may incorporate
specific motifs from the interior or exterior of a building into the design
concept.
Slim's
interior lighting is made in metals such as bronze, brass and copper, as well
as wood, horn, crystals and glass. A comprehensive choice of finishes are
available.
Project
lead times are from two to six months depending upon scale and complexity.
Slim Barrett collaborates with clients on site
specific custom-made lighting.Requests
for bespoke custom-made lighting are welcomed.
Functional Objects
Slim Barrett functional objects, such as candelabrums, candle sticks, toilet roll holders and clocks are custom-made, to commission.
Performance Piece at Kintetsu
Slim Barrett created “Salt Portrait” for performance at Kintetsu Art Gallery in Osaka, Japan. The piece ran for 30 minutes and involved creation of music, projected images and 30 costumed performers. The one week event was chosen as part of a cultural exchange exhibition "The best of British Contemporary Art and Design".
Jewelled costumes were made in velvet, calico, knitted wool. Metal corsets, surrealist armour and chastity belts, worn as garnitures, were teamed with specially commissioned roman sandals by Jimmy Choo.
Collaboration with John Galliano
Slim Barrett collaborated with John Galliano to create cutting edge pieces for his catwalk shows in Paris. These include crowns, pienetas, scooter-wing-mirror tiara's, 17inch feather brooches, along with a collapsible-bow bag and a reticule handbag.
Television and Movie Commissions
Slim
Barrett designs exclusive pieces for television and movie productions. Movies include "Miranda" - the diamond toe ring Christini Ricci eventually swallowed and in 2007 Slim was commissioned by the renowned crystal brand, Swarovski,
to create the English Queen Victoria's Coronation Crown and two State Sceptres
for the movie "Young Victoria". Employing virtually the same making
process used by Queen Victoria's
makers, Slim produced a true replica of Victoria's Coronation Crown.The Sceptres were featured in the Sunday
Times on September 14th, 2008.
Tv work include "Jupiter Moon", French and Saunders TV spoof"Lord of the Rings" and "The Vicar of Dibley".
Collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld
The collaboration between Slim Barrett and Karl Lagerfeld started when Karl asked Slim to create gold mesh head-wear for the Chanel haute couture show in Paris.
In 1997 Lagerfeld invited Slim to Paris to create dress garniture and hair accessories in knitted sterling silver for the finale of his catwalk show.
Following Karl Lagerfeld's Autumn/Winter show at the Louvre Pyramid in Paris, the collection received premiere press editorial globally in publications such as the British Telegraph and the International Herald Tribune (left).
Collaboration with Ungaro
Emanuel Ungaro commissioned Slim Barrett to design a collection of hair ornaments to complement his rose print designs.
In addition Slim created his Rose Stem and Rose Bud pieces.
Collaboration with Versace
Versace commissioned Slim Barret to design hair ornaments for their catwalk show in 1999. Slim created "Flame" tiara and "Twisted" fairy crowns, with both short and long crystal fringing. These hair pieces have featured in many pop promos and in premium fashion and bridal publications.
The Leaper - Exhibition in Royal Festival Hall
Slim Barrett "Leaper” exhibition at the Royal Festival Hall showed a series
of mixed media pieces on the theme of the heart.
In 1993 Slim Barrett and his art work was featured in a Channel 4 documentary by Mark
Kidel entitled "The Heart Has Reasons". The profile included an in-depth interview with Slim about his work as an artist, in the context of his use of the heart motif.
Legend Exhibition at Space NK
In 1996 Slim Barrett was invited to exhibit at the flagship store of SpaceNK in Covent Garden, London.
Inspired by his interest in ancient and mythical symbols, 'Legend' exhibition presented a large body of work including sculpture, functional objects and jewellery.
Sheikh Majed Al-Sabah and Stoique
In 2007
the renowned crystal company, Swarovski commissioned Slim Barrett to make a chandelier
from a concept design by Sheikh Majed Al-Sabah and the uber Japanese design group, Stoique.
The
chandelier comprises of 18 crowns and 6 orbs, individually lit with LED's and emblazoned with peace
motifs. The crowns and orbs are skillfully grouped together and bound in heavy chains with a jewelled 'peace' sword thrust through the centre.
Sheikh Majed Al-Sabah's own brand of perfume is contained within each
orb allowing the aroma tofilter into the atmosphere.Set with thousands of faceted jet Swarovski crystals, the chandelier has a dark oil-grey surface finish. The chandelier was exhibited at the CrystalPalace exhibition during Milan design week in 2007.
